The process of Re-dyeing – A kimono for Mary

When I first receive a garment to be re-dyed, one of the first few steps would be hand-washing, mordanting, deciding what colours/ textures I would like to explore & setting an intention to create something special.

Usually, a certain colour would be requested to cover up stains, or in other cases (like Mary’s!) total artistic freedom — which is usually more fun as I get to explore and express.

Mary’s robe was initially in soft cream, which was then dyed with a first base colour.

Creating stains & textures. My personal favourite part.

Dye, wash, hang dry, repeat. A process that comes with a few rounds of dyeing.
This goes for at least 2 rounds. Layering dyes and stains till I’m happy with the final product.

The finished product.
Thank you Mary for your trust!
