About
Project Coal focuses on the exploration of natural dyes; offering one-of-a-kind textiles, objects & art.
Our hand-crafted pieces are made with the intention of adorning spaces and the self. Using botanical extracts & pigments to infuse fabrics with colours of the earth, creating pieces that have a story to tell.
With experimentation in mind, each piece has been interwoven with the dyer’s own expression & interpretation of the art and natural world.
Est. 2014. Based in Singapore.
The artist
Crystal Lee (b. 1993) is an artist & natural dyer based in Singapore. She graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts in 2013 with a diploma in Fine Arts.
Her dyeing journey started in the summer of 2014 when she spent time in England experimenting with the art of natural dyeing. Her interest in the craft was further deepened by a workshop in London, which exposed her to the alchemy of natural dyeing & several dyeing techniques.
Crystal founded Project Coal in 2014, which started as a platform to showcase her dye experiments. Project Coal has since evolved into an art brand, where she creates both artworks and functional pieces.
Alongside her deep appreciation for sacred & ceremonial textiles, rituals, old artefacts and the beauty of nature’s textures and colours, she is interested in exploring ways in which textiles can hold experiences and emotions, expressing qualities of intangible elements.
